Welcome to the Parent and Family Newsletter!

We are so happy that you are part of the Illinois State University family! The Parent and Family Newsletter is a monthly publication to provide you information and resources that might be helpful for you and your Redbird. We hope you find it beneficial. In addition, you will find the Parent and Family Services website and the Parent and Family Guide as valuable resources as your Redbird navigates through their college journey.

Classes

Classes for the fall 2021 semester began Monday, August 16. For a list of other important dates for the 21–22 academic year, visit the University’s academic calendar.

Academic advising

University College academic advisors advise all students who have less than 24 credit hours earned, with the exception of those students participating in the Honors Program. Your student’s advisor helps them choose their classes, choose a major, change majors, stay on track to graduate, and generally adjust to college life. Students can schedule an appointment with their advisor on the University College website. Advisors are also virtually available during designated times for drop-in questions, no appointment needed. Students should call (309) 438-7604 or email Advising@IllinoisState.edu for Zoom room information for the Advisor on Call.

  • Mondays: 1–3:30 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 9–11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesdays: 9–11:30 a.m.; 1–3:30 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 9–11:30 a.m.; 1–3:30 p.m.
  • Fridays: 1–3:30 p.m.

Information about your student’s account

If you are enrolled in a payment plan, payments for fall 2021 are due to the Student Accounts Office on or before the following dates:

  • First installment: Friday, August 13
  • Second installment: Friday, September 10
  • Third installment: Friday, October 8
  • Fourth installment: Friday, November 12
  • Fifth installment: Friday, December 10

These dates are very important—past due balances will place a hold on your student’s account, which can affect their course registration for future semesters.

Refunds for the fall 2021 semester began Friday, August 13. Your student will receive an email with information about if their refund will be sent via direct deposit, or if they will need to pick up the check in the Student Accounts Office.

Festival ISU

Festival ISU 2021 will take place from Tuesday, August 31, through Friday, September 3, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on the Quad. Festival ISU is the easiest way for your student to get involved on campus. Hundreds of our Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and campus departments come to the Quad to spread awareness about their organizations, encourage students to get involved, and hand out free Illinois State swag. A list of participating organizations for Festival ISU 2021 can be found on the Dean of Students Office website.

Family Weekend

Family Weekend offers an opportunity for families to visit with their students and experience Illinois State University together. Join us October 1–3, and make some Redbird memories enjoying Redbird football, dueling pianos, Justin Willman in Magic for Humans, academic open houses, and more. With a wide range of activities planned, families can choose to spend the day or the entire weekend. Registration is not required for Family Weekend; however, some events require advance ticket purchase. For a complete schedule of events or to purchase tickets, visit the Family Weekend website. Check out past years’ photos at the site or on social media under #RedbirdFamily.

Social Greek life recruitment

If your student is considering going through social sorority or fraternity recruitment, they must attend a Potential New Member Orientation (before they can accept their bid for membership).

College Panhellenic Council sorority recruitment takes place from September 9–12 and September 17–19. Registration for sorority recruitment costs $50.

Interfraternity Council fraternity recruitment takes place September 6–19, but fraternities also host recruitment events throughout the year. Registration for social fraternity recruitment costs $25 before Wednesday, September 1, and $30 after.

If your student is considering joining a cultural sorority or fraternity, they should contact individual chapters about the membership process. Students of any academic year are able to join sororities and fraternities. For more information about Greek life and recruitment, please visit the Dean of Students Office website.
