Adjusting

As we near Labor Day, students should be settling into the routine of the semester. If your student is having trouble adjusting, please make sure they are working with their Resident Assistant or the Dean of Students Office staff to help them find ways to acclimate, find resources, and get involved. Student Counseling Services can also be a great resource.

Strong start with academics

Encourage your students to stay on top of their course content through attending class, regularly checking ReggieNet and other online course resources, visiting instructors’ office hours and seeking academic services. If students need assistance, there are many free academic services available, including Academic Peer Coaching, tutoring for many courses, academic skills workshops, writing assistance and more. Students can visit Academic Help | uCollege — Illinois State for details.

Move-In 2022 Parent, Family, Student Survey

Please take a short survey regarding Move-In 2022 if you, your student, or family member participated in moving a student into university housing facilities in any way. University Housing Services would love to hear your feedback!

Career and internship fairs

Career Services is hosting a Part-time Job Fair on Tuesday, September 6, from 1–3 p.m. in the Bone Student Center. There will also be a Fall Internship Fair on Wednesday, September 21, from 2–5 p.m. in the Bone Student Center. Students from all majors and class levels will be able to connect with employers seeking to fill part-time jobs or internships or network with professionals from various industries.

Family Weekend

Family Weekend allows families to visit with their students and experience Illinois State University together. Join us September 30–October 2, and make some Redbird memories by enjoying Redbird football, dueling pianos, Michael Carbonaro: Lies on Stage, Student Fitness Center Tours, and more. With a wide range of activities planned, families can choose to spend the day or the entire weekend. Registration is not required for Family Weekend; however, some events require advance ticket purchases. For a complete schedule of events or to purchase tickets, visit the Family Weekend website. Check out past years’ photos at the site or on social media under #RedbirdFamily.

Work orders for residence halls

University Housing Services is here to help your student feel comfortable in their home away from home. To that end, there is an opportunity for students to submit a work order if there is a problem with their room in the residence hall. Students must submit these work orders themselves while connected to the campus internet so their resident assistant/community assistant (RA/CA) or a full-time staff member can follow up with them directly to ensure that the problem has been fixed.

Roommate conflicts

Living with a roommate isn’t always easy, whether students knew each other before becoming roommates or not. Things that seemed minor and bothered your student early in the semester may start to build as the semester progresses. The good news is that most often, these conflicts can be resolved with mature and respectful conversations between roommates. Below are some resources for students living on and off campus to help deal with conflict.

Residence halls
All roommates were asked to complete a Roommate Bill of Rights to assist them in understanding boundaries for one another and to use if a conflict should arise. Roommates that need additional assistance should contact residence hall staff - there is a resident assistant (student leader) on every floor and residence hall coordinator (full-time staff member) in every building. Cardinal Court and Fell/School Street apartments have community aides (student leaders) in each building and a coordinator (full-time staff member) assigned to the complex.

Off-campus living
Most often, we see that conflict between students living off campus is rooted in a lack of communication and differing expectations. We encourage students to speak directly to each other and discuss the concern at hand— rarely will apartment management permit a student to move to another unit. If a student leaves the apartment, they are still expected to pay rent based on the terms of the lease.

How to sign up for emergency alerts

In the event of an emergency, information will be shared with the campus community through the ISU Emergency Alert system. Alerting channels include ISU email addresses, text messaging, Facebook and Twitter accounts, the University homepage, campus phones, and various campus displays.

Family and community members are encouraged to enroll in the system in order to receive alerts by texting “ISUAlerts” to 67283.

Student account due dates

If you are enrolled in a payment plan, payments for fall 2022 are due to the Student Accounts Office on or before the following dates:

  • Second installment— Friday, September 9
  • Third installment—Friday, October 14
  • Fourth installment—Friday, November 11
  • Fifth installment—Friday, December 9

These dates are very important to remember—past due balances will place a hold on your student’s account, which can affect their course registration for future semesters.
